Mahindra Responds To Viral BE 6 Fire Incident - Says Battery Not At Fault!

A video of a Mahindra BE 6 electric SUV that caught fire in Gulaothi, Uttar Pradesh, has been making the rounds on social media. After the video went viral, it once again sparked debate around electric cars and their safety, with many netizens questioning the safety of Mahindra's flagship electric SUVs. However, after investigating the incident, the carmaker has now issued an official statement outlining what exactly led to the fire in the BE 6 near Gulaothi.

According to Mahindra, the battery of the BE 6 remained unharmed despite facing 'intense thermal stress' from an external source, which led to the fire. Nevertheless, Mahindra's inspection has revealed that the BE 6 battery health parameters and individual cell voltage are within specified

limits and the motor is intact even after the fire. So, what exactly led to the fire in the electric SUV?

As per the statement, the vehicle diagnostics revealed that the BE 6 issued a high tyre temperature alert, following which the EV limited its speed and went into a system shutdown before coming to a halt. The vehicle data further confirmed that the car had been driven for over 10 minutes at approximately 60 kmph on a full deflated rear right tyre, despite repeated alerts. This led to the vehicle's electronic stability and traction control systems go into overdrive as they were constantly trying to manage the rear tyre from slipping. Mahindra says the analysis is corroborated by the video footage from bystanders that has been going viral. Despite the fire, all safety systems of the BE 6 worked as designed and all occupants were able to safely exit from the EV.

Bottom line, Mahindra claims that the recent BE 6 fire incident in Uttar Pradesh was due to prolonged driving on a flat rear tyre and had nothing to do with the vehicle's battery or electric motor. The BE 6 is an electric coupe SUV based on Mahindra's INGLO electric platform. Its battery is rated for high voltage safety, water leakage protection, thermal protection and vibration protection.
