BYD’s luxury sub-brand, Yangwang, has officially announced that its flagship electric hypercar, the U9 Xtreme, has set a new lap record for electric super sports cars at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife which is famously known as the “Green Hell.”
Achieving a record-breaking lap time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds, the U9 Xtreme became the first electric supercar ever to complete a Nurburgring lap in under seven minutes. This achievement came just weeks after the car broke the world top-speed record with a 496.22 km/h run at the ATP Papenburg testing facility.
The Nurburgring is one of the toughest racetracks with a 20.8-kilometer loop filled with over 150 corners, blind crests and steep elevation changes. It is often used by top carmakers
to test the ultimate limits of performance and handling.

The record lap was driven by Moritz Kranz, who is a seasoned German racer with nearly 10,000 laps of Nurburgring experience. Praising the car’s engineering, Kranz said, “This lap is proof of BYD and Yangwang’s ability to perfectly balance power, control, and precision in an electric platform.”
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is powered by four electric motors, each capable of spinning up to 30,000 rpm, which delivers a combined 3,000 PS around 2,958 horsepower. It runs on the world’s first 1200V ultra-high-voltage EV platform which offers lightning-fast power delivery with incredible efficiency. The car’s DiSus-X intelligent body-control system helps it adapt to the road surface instantly, which maintains balance even during extreme high-speed maneuvers.
To handle Nurburgring’s grueling conditions, the U9 Xtreme received several upgrades including a new cooling system, titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic brakes and GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick tires, which are developed jointly with tire company Giti.
BYD’s Executive Vice President Stella Li called it “a phenomenal achievement,” adding that the car “proves electric vehicles can dominate both in top speed and track performance.”
Only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme will be produced which makes it an ultra-exclusive car. With this record, Yangwang has redefined what electric cars are capable of, proving that the future of speed and performance might just be powered by silence.
