For buyers looking to switch to cleaner, more affordable fuel options or wish to buy their first compact CNG hatchback, two of the most popular options available in India right now are the Tata Altroz
CNG and Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG. Both are compact, stylish, efficient, budget-friendly and practical. Lets have a look at the key differences.
Price And Engine
The Tata Altroz CNG starts at Rs 7.21 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Maruti Baleno CNG starts a bit higher at Rs 7.69 lakh (ex-showroom). At first glance, the Baleno is more expensive, but it compensates with higher fuel efficiency.
The Baleno’s 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder K-Series engine produces 76 bhp and 98.5 Nm of torque, delivering a mileage of 30.61 km/kg. Meanwhile, the Altroz’s 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron engine produces 72.5 bhp and 103 Nm of torque, with a mileage of around 26.2 km/kg.
Driving Feel And Gearbox
In terms of driving feel, the Baleno’s 4-cylinder engine is smoother and quieter, which makes it ideal for city commutes. However, the Altroz’s higher torque means it feels a bit more responsive, especially when overtaking or carrying passengers. Both cars come with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Safety And Practicality
One factor where the Altroz truly stands out is its safety and practicality as it has a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, which is the highest in its class and comes with Tata’s innovative twin-cylinder CNG setup. This smart design places two smaller tanks under the boot floor, which actually free up 210 litres of usable luggage space. This is a major advantage over the Baleno, whose single large tank occupies most of the boot.
The Baleno, on the other hand, received a 4-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP (BNCAP). This hatchback scores higher with its spacious cabin and longer wheelbase, which provides better legroom for passengers. It also benefits from Maruti’s massive service network and excellent reliability record.
Features
Both hatchbacks come loaded with features like 7-inch touchscreens, smartphone connectivity and modern interiors. The Altroz adds premium touches such as a sunroof, rear AC vents and auto climate control in higher trims, which are not available in Maruti Suzuki Baleno.
If you value efficiency and smooth driving, go for the Baleno CNG. But if safety, practicality, and smarter design matter more, the Tata Altroz CNG offers more value at a lower price.
