India's auto retail market just posted its best-ever May sales. Total retail sales hit 25,31,067 units in May 2026, up 9.55% from 23,10,451 units in the same month last year — and this happened while the market was dealing with fuel price revisions, a brutal heatwave as well as global headwinds. For anyone tracking where Indian auto demand is headed, these numbers matter. The growth wasn't confined to one segment either, which is what makes this month's FADA data worth paying attention to.
Every Major Segment Grew — Some Hit Records
According to FADA, passenger vehicles led the pack with a 23.25% jump to 4,02,591 units, against 3,26,656 units in May 2025. Two-wheelers hit their highest-ever monthly volume at 18,44,947 units, up 7.54% year-on-year. Three-wheelers rose 3.56% to 1,11,526
units and commercial vehicles climbed 5.29% to 83,823 units. Three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, tractors, and the overall market all clocked their best-ever May figures. That kind of broad-based performance — where no single segment is carrying the others — is unusual, and it tells you demand was fairly widespread rather than concentrated.
What Pushed Sales Up, and What Could Slow Things Down
Dealers credited marriage-season buying and rural demand for much of the momentum. The electric two-wheeler share rose to 9.25% of the segment, up from 6.11% a year earlier — nearly a three percentage point swing in twelve months, which is significant. On the flip side, extreme heat in several regions kept showroom footfall lower than it could have been and supply gaps on specific models also put a ceiling on how much higher the numbers could have gone.
For June, FADA expects demand to hold steady, with the monsoon's progress, early Kharif sowing activity and the RBI's decision to keep the repo rate at 5.25% all acting as stabilising factors. Dealer sentiment backs that up — 50.52% expect growth in June, 39.90% expect a flat trend, and only 9.59% are bracing for a decline. For buyers, that translates to a reasonably active market — new launches still coming through, financing conditions not tightening, and the EV two-wheeler space continuing to pull in buyers who weren't in that conversation a year ago.
