Over 9,000 motorcycles have been recalled for a major issue in the US but the issue could be affecting motorcycles sold in India as well. The recall has been issued by KTM North America, for both 390 Adventure
and Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 models. Here is what we know so far.
KTM's North American arm has recently issued the safety recall for 9,070 motorcycles between the 390 Adventure and the Vitpilen 401. The issue is a faulty electronic throttle assembly that has the potential to cause a loss in throttle response while riding.

This poses a serious risk to riders and the defect arises due to moisture entering the electronic throttle's components, leading to a compromised electrical connection. The scariest part is that riders would never see the issue coming and affected motorcycles would drop to idle without any warning, leading to sudden power loss while on the move.
In terms of which bikes are potentially facing the issue, KTM North America has clarified that 390 Adventure bikes manufactured between 2022 to 2024, Vitpilen 401 bikes manufactured between 2022 to 2023 and Svartpilen 401 bikes manufactured between 2022 to 2023 are affected by the faulty component. The recall comes after the defect had been flagged earlier in bikes present in Europe and is now confirmed in the US.
The India Angle:
KTM has announced that the faulty electronic throttle units were manufactured by Uno Minda Ltd. in India. It has been identified in motorcycles that were manufactured in late 2021 to early 2024. This would mean that 390 Adventure, Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 owners in India should take caution as well, as these models were on sale in the country during the flagged period.
Solution:
KTM North America has stated that it will replace the throttle unit in the affected bikes with an updated version that started rolling out in bikes manufactured after May 2024.
While KTM India is yet to issue any official statement regarding the throttle issue for motorcycles sold in India between 2021 and 2024, it would be a good idea to ride carefully and report any throttle issues to the authorised service centre.
