Ola Electric is back in the spotlight, this time with a new design patent for a compact electric car. After shelving its ambitious car project last year, the company seems ready to take another shot, this time with a smaller, city-focused model.
The newly filed patent reveals a compact hatchback with a squared-off silhouette, four doors, and a practical two-row seating layout. From the proportions and design cues visible in the patent, this could be Ola’s direct answer to cars like the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV. If this makes it into production, it will likely be built on the company’s Gen 4 platform, a modular setup capable of underpinning multiple vehicle types, from scooters to three-wheelers and now cars.

Underpinning it all will be Ola’s locally produced 4680 series battery cells. These cells are expected to deliver better energy density and improved thermal management compared to older units. Combined with the Gen 4 architecture, the setup could offer respectable range and performance without driving up prices, something Ola will need to nail if it wants to make a mark in the entry-level EV market.

The timing of this patent filing also seems deliberate. Ola recently celebrated its millionth vehicle rollout and its first profitable quarter, giving the brand some momentum. The move into cars, particularly compact, urban-focused ones, shows Ola’s intent to capture a larger share of India’s EV ecosystem. While official details remain under wraps, it wouldn’t be surprising if the production model incorporates features like fast or even wireless charging, technologies Ola has been actively developing.
