2027 Toyota GR86 Revealed - Sharper Throttle, Sweeter Shifts and Bold Red Cabin

Toyota has revealed the 2027 GR86 for the US market — not a redesign, but a set of targeted updates focused on driving feel. The throttle calibration has been reworked, the manual gearbox shift between fourth and fifth has been improved, and the interior gets new colour and trim options. The GR86 has not been officially sold in India in its current generation, but for enthusiasts here who track this segment, it remains one of the few rear-wheel drive, naturally aspirated sports coupes still in production at a relatively accessible price globally.

What Toyota Has Actually Changed

The 2.4-litre boxer four-cylinder carries over as is — 228 hp, 249 Nm, 0 to 100 kmph in 6.1 seconds with the six-speed manual, half a second slower with the automatic. What changed is how the engine

responds when you use the throttle. Toyota has reworked the calibration to make the response smoother and more linear. It is not something you would notice in casual city driving, but on a twisty road where you are managing throttle through corners, the difference in feel is real.

On the gearbox, the chamfer between fourth and fifth gear has been widened by roughly 0.02 inches. A small number on paper, but it translates to a cleaner, more positive shift between those two gears and reduces the chance of a missed shift when you are driving hard. These are the kind of changes that come from people who actually use the car in the way it is meant to be used, rather than changes made for a brochure.

Two safety updates round out the mechanical side — a monocular camera has been added to improve object detection at intersections, and the existing stereo camera's recognition range has been nearly doubled, which improves how the cruise control system reads and tracks vehicles ahead.

Interior and Colour Updates

Inside, the Premium trim gets cast iron black finish on the switches, knobs and gear shifter — a small change that makes the cabin feel more consistent. A new Cockpit Red interior option is also available: black Ultrasuede seats with red leather side bolsters, red door accents and red floor mats.

On the outside, a new solid grey called Thunder joins the colour lineup. The Yuzu Edition yellow variant is gone for 2027. Going forward, the GR86 is available in base and Premium trims only.

When It Arrives and What It Means for India

The 2027 Toyota GR86 goes on sale in the US this summer. The brand has not announced pricing yet. Toyota India does not sell the GR86, and there is no confirmed plan to change that. The car occupies a segment — rear-wheel drive, manual-first, naturally aspirated sports coupe — that simply has no equivalent on sale in India today.

For enthusiasts following the space, the 2027 update confirms Toyota is actively maintaining and refining the GR86 rather than letting it coast to end of life. A next-generation model has been reported in development, potentially with a turbocharged engine and Mazda collaboration, but nothing official has come through on that yet.
