With multiple mid-sized SUV launches in recent months, prospective buyers are bound to be confused about which models to shortlist. From segment leaders to new and attractive SUVs, the segment has been the centre of attraction in the automotive industry. Most recently, Renault announced the comeback of the Duster SUV with multiple engine options, hi-tech features and a rugged design. Hence, it might have been a curveball for car buyers who might have been considering to purchase the new Tata Motors Sierra SUV. Here is a quick comparison between the two SUVs to help you decide whether to wait for the 2026 Duster or drive home a Sierra.
Tata Sierra Engine, Features, Price, Delivery Time -
The new Sierra brings rugged design and tall dimensions to
the mid-sized SUV segment, along with a nostalgic charm. While the name is resurrected, the new Sierra is an all-out blast into the future. It gets high-end features such as Level 2 ADAS, triple-screen setup, panoramic sunroof and more.
In terms of engine options, the Sierra has the option of two petrol and one diesel engine, along with a selection of manual and automatic gearboxes. Priced between Rs 11.49 lakh and Rs 21.29 lakh ex-showroom, the Sierra is reported to have a waiting period of up to 3 to 4 months due to high demand.
2026 Renault Duster Engine, Features, Price, Delivery Time -
On the other hand, the Duster is slightly more compact but equally rugged with its scuff plates, body claddings and sculpted body lines. It gets a feature-packed cabin that boasts of a panoramic sunroof, dual screens, ambient lighting, ventilated seats and more. Level 2 ADAS functions are part of the new Duster's manifesto as well.
The Deciding Factor -
The biggest differentiator for the Duster, when compared to the Sierra, lies in the powertrain options. Renault is bringing three new petrol engines with the SUV, including a strong hybrid petrol version. This gives the Duster a distinct edge over the Sierra, which only offers traditional ICE-powered options. While the Duster's prices are not yet out, Renault is expected to announce them by mid of March 2026. Pre-bookings are currently open at a token amount of Rs 21,000. According to Renault, deliveries of the petrol-only Duster will start from April 2026 and the strong hybrid versions will start rolling out from November 2026, around the Diwali season. The expected price range is between Rs 15 to Rs 25 lakh.
Considering the factors mentioned above, both the Tata Sierra and Renault Duster check the right boxes in terms of design, features and safety. The biggest differentiator between the two lies in the engine options, which would ultimately define the preference of one over the other. Hence, if you are someone who has a daily travel of over 50-80 kilometres and frequent highway trips, then the Sierra diesel could suit you better. On the other hand, if you are looking for a daily driver that is spacious but as efficient as an economy hatchback, then waiting for the Duster strong hybrid makes more sense. For performance enthusiasts, both SUVs offer turbocharged petrol engine options with double-clutch (DCT) automatic gearboxes.
