The new Tata Sierra EV has arrived to fight against the Hyundai Creta Electric, which has been quietly winning over customers for over a year. Both are midsize electric SUVs and start close to Rs 18 lakh. Moreover, they target buyers who want range, features, and a familiar badge. Here's how they stack up where it counts.
Tata Sierra EV vs Hyundai Creta Electric: Battery and Range
Both EVs offer two battery options. As for the Sierra EV, you can have it either with a 63kWh pack or a larger 75kWh unit. Tata claims 565 kilometres of range from the smaller battery and up to 665 kilometres from the bigger one on the MIDC cycle. Those are strong numbers, and the latter is among the highest in this segment.
Hyundai plays it more conservatively. At launch, it offered a 42kWh battery and a 51.4kWh long-range pack
with the Creta Electric, rated at 390 kilometres and 473 kilometres, respectively, on a single charge. Hyundai has enhanced the efficiency of the Creta Electric through a new Over-The-Air (OTA) software update that improves battery cell performance. Now, the SUV offers a higher range of up to 420 kilometres with the 42kWh battery pack and up to 510 kilometres with the larger 51.4kWh unit. Even the Creta's best falls well short of the Sierra's entry-level range, giving Tata a clear headline advantage here.
Tata Sierra EV vs Hyundai Creta Electric: Powertrain and Performance
The Creta Electric sticks to a single front-mounted motor throughout, making 133bhp with the smaller battery and 169bhp with the larger one. It does 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The Sierra EV has the upper hand with an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup Tata calls QWD, which is offered on the top Empowered A trim. With Boost mode, it hits 100km/h in 5.8 seconds, a faster acceleration than the front-drive Creta can match.
Tata Sierra EV vs Hyundai Creta Electric: Charging
Tata asserts that the Sierra EV can add over 250 kilometres of range in 15 minutes using express DC charging. In comparison, the Creta Electric's 51.4kWh pack, on a 50kW DC charger, takes about 58 minutes to go from 10% to 80%. Both accept AC home charging, though the Sierra's faster claimed top-ups give it the edge for long-distance drivers.
