BMW has taken the wraps off the all-new iX5. It is basically the first time the X5 nameplate will also be offered as a fully electric SUV. The new model introduces BMW's latest Gen6 eDrive technology, an 800V electrical architecture, a 141 kWh battery pack and a claimed WLTP range of up to 845 km. It also supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW which makes it one of the quickest-charging electric SUVs announced by the brand so far. Here's a closer look at what the new BMW iX5 brings and why it marks a significant update over the current generation.
141 kWh Battery, 845 Km Claimed Range
The biggest talking point of the new iX5 is its battery and charging technology. BMW has equipped the SUV with a 141 kWh battery that uses its latest cylindrical battery cells. According to the company,
the new cells store more energy than before while improving overall efficiency.
In its most efficient version, the iX5 is claimed to cover up to 845 km on the WLTP test cycle. The SUV also moves to an 800V electrical system which allows it to support DC charging speeds of up to 460 kW. On compatible charging infrastructure, this should significantly reduce charging times compared to BMW's current electric models.
Another addition is bidirectional charging. Depending on the market, the iX5 will be able to supply power to external electrical devices or even work with compatible home energy systems.
New Platform Supports Multiple Powertrains
Unlike BMW's existing electric SUVs, the new iX5 has been developed on the company's latest flexible vehicle architecture. This platform has been designed to accommodate different powertrain options. It allows BMW to sell the next-generation X5 with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel-cell and fully electric drivetrains.
BMW says the updated electric drivetrain has been developed with a focus on improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption. The SUV also gets a revised battery management system and upgraded thermal management both of which are intended to deliver more consistent performance in different driving and charging conditions.
India Launch Yet To Be Confirmed
BMW has revealed the iX5 for global markets but it has not announced whether the electric SUV will be introduced in India. It also introduced the new X5 with various powertrain options. More technical specifications including motor outputs and performance figures, are expected to be shared closer to its international launch.
For now, the iX5 provides a preview of BMW's next generation of electric technology. Features such as the larger battery, 800V architecture and 460 kW charging capability are likely to appear in future BMW EVs as the brand expands its global electric vehicle portfolio.
