Mahindra has revealed a new defence-focused All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) based on the Thar Roxx SUV. It showcases how its off-road platform is being adapted for military operations in India. Shared on his social media platform by Anand Mahindra, the tactical vehicle features extensive structural modifications compared to the standard five-door Thar Roxx launched for civilian buyers in 2024. The ATV has been developed with a clear focus on mobility across difficult terrain, rapid troop movement as well as operational flexibility. Its reveal comes at a time when Indian defence forces are increasingly looking at locally developed tactical mobility solutions instead of relying entirely on imported platforms.
Thar Roxx-Based ATV Gets Major Structural Changes
While the ATV borrows its core architecture
from the Thar Roxx, the vehicle seen in official images looks significantly different from the production SUV. The front fascia retains round headlamps and the familiar grille layout, but most body panels have been redesigned for military applications. The ATV uses an open-top setup with a visible roll cage, exposed rear loading area, side-mounted utility equipment along with heavy-duty off-road tyres.
The vehicle also appears to have shortened overhangs and a stripped-back design to improve approach and departure angles during off-road operations. Reports indicate the ATV can accommodate multiple armed personnel along with mission-specific gear. Unlike the regular Thar Roxx, comfort-oriented features have been removed in favour of operational practicality and easier field maintenance. Matte olive-green paint and blackout components further separate it visually from the civilian version.
Ladder-Frame Platform And 4x4 Hardware Remain Key
The Thar Roxx is built on Mahindra’s ladder-frame chassis and already comes with 4x4 hardware in selected variants, making it suitable for military adaptation. The standard model is powered by 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, though Mahindra has not confirmed the exact powertrain specifications of the defence-spec ATV.
The showcased vehicle also features off-road focused additions including recovery hooks, beadlock-style wheels, rugged suspension travel and high-grade all-terrain tyres. The ATV has been developed for quick deployment in areas with limited road infrastructure, where compact tactical vehicles are preferred over larger military trucks.

Why This Matters For India’s Defence Vehicle Ecosystem
Light tactical vehicles play an important role in surveillance, border patrolling, rescue operations and personnel transport across mountainous and remote regions. A locally engineered platform based on an existing SUV architecture can reduce development costs while improving spare parts availability and servicing support.
Mahindra already has experience supplying vehicles to defence and paramilitary forces in India and the Thar Roxx-based ATV expands that portfolio into a more specialised off-road tactical segment.
