The Indian car market has witnessed many successful models over the years, but only a few manage to stay relevant for decades and one such name is the Maruti Suzuki WagonR, a car that has become a familiar name on Indian roads. On 18 December 2025, Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced a major milestone which is 35 lakh units of the WagonR have now been produced in India, which means that more than 3.5 million families have chosen the WagonR over the last 25 years.
With this achievement, the WagonR joins other famous Maruti models like the Alto and the Swift, which have also crossed similar high production figures. The WagonR was first launched in India in December 1999 and at that time, its tall and boxy design looked very different from other small
cars on sale. However, that unique “tall-boy” shape turned out to be its biggest strength, as it offered more headroom, easy entry and exit and a spacious cabin, features that Indian families quickly fell in love with.

Today, the WagonR is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s plants in Gurgaon and Manesar, both located in Haryana. Over the years, the car has evolved with better engines, improved safety and modern features, while still keeping its original, simple and practical character intact.
Commenting on this achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said that this milestone is not just about numbers. According to him, it reflects the deep trust and emotional connection that customers have built with the WagonR over generations. He also highlighted that it is rare for a car to remain popular even after 25 years, and thanked customers for their continued support.
The WagonR has always focused on what most buyers want, like, fuel efficiency, space, and ease of use. Its tall design makes it comfortable for city driving, while its reliable engines help keep running costs low. These qualities make it especially attractive for first-time buyers and small families.
The WagonR’s story is not limited to India. The Suzuki WagonR was first introduced in Japan in September 1993 as a compact and practical mini wagon, while today, it is manufactured in countries like Japan, India, Hungary and Indonesia, and is sold in over 75 countries worldwide, including Europe. In August 2025, the global Suzuki WagonR crossed 1 crore units in cumulative sales, proving its worldwide popularity.
