While some engineering solutions may fail, others succeed well enough to last decades. One such innovation in the automotive industry is Suzuki's ALLGRIP 4X4 drive system, which has been on the market
for the last 55 years and will soon be launched in the global version of the eVitara electric SUV, set to debut in India on December 2, 2025. Here's a quick look at the history and engineering behind Suzuki's ALLGRIP 4X4.

Suzuki ALLGRIP Quick Recap:
The renowned 4x4 tech from Suzuki first came into production with the LJ10 lightweight off-road vehicle in 1970. The LJ10 was also the foundation of what would later be reborn as the first Jimny in 1981 (Codename SJ410). By this time, the LJ series had established a reputation for its 4x4 capabilities in Japan and global markets, including North America and Europe. In 1985, India got its first taste of Suzuki 4x4s as Maruti Suzuki launched the Gypsy, which was based on the SJ410. Over the decades, globally recognised car models like the Grand Vitara, Swift, Jimny, SX4, S-Cross and Ignis have offered the 4x4 tech and helped Suzuki earn its reputation in the segment. The 4x4 tech was introduced as the ALLGRIP in 2013, when Suzuki introduced the 4x4 system with an automatic transmission in the Swift ALLGRIP Auto sold internationally. Today, India has several Maruti Suzuki models that offer the ALLGRIP 4X4 system, including the Jimny, Grand Vitara and the newly launched Victoris SUV.

ALLGRIP SELECT AWD Goes Electric:
With the new eVitara, Maruti Suzuki is turning a fresh page and venturing into the electric segment. Along with several segment firsts, the eVitara will also be launched with Suzuki's ALLGRIP-e 4WD system that is expected to make it more capable over rough terrains and in extreme conditions. While the excitement is brewing for the eVitara's India launch on December 2, we expect the ALLGRIP-e 4WD version of the electric SUV to arrive in India after it has been launched in Japan first on January 16, 2026. This means that fans of the 4x4 system will have to wait till next year to experience the ALLGRIP 4X4 in its electric avatar.
