Tata Motors has begun road-testing the upcoming Tata Avinya electric SUV in India. This marks the model’s first public appearance ahead of its expected 2027 launch. The development is significant for Indian buyers because the Avinya is set to become Tata's most premium EV yet, bringing a new platform, larger battery options as well as technology that sits above the company’s current electric lineup. Although the test mule remains heavily camouflaged, the latest spy shots reveal several production-ready details. They also offer a glimpse into Tata’s plans for the next phase of electric mobility in the country.
How Different Is It?
Despite the camouflage, the prototype carries several design cues from the Avinya concepts unveiled over the last few years. The SUV appears
to have a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a coupe-inspired roofline, giving it proportions that differ from Tata’s existing EVs.
The front end is expected to feature a full-width LED light signature, while vertically positioned headlamps are likely to sit lower on the bumper. Spy images also show flush door handles and large alloy wheels designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Unlike the original concept, however, the test vehicle uses conventional outside mirrors instead of cameras. This suggests Tata is adapting some of the futuristic elements for production and regulatory requirements.
What Battery Could It Get?
Tata has already confirmed that the Avinya will not use the Jaguar Land Rover EMA platform as initially planned. Instead, the SUV is expected to be based on the Freelander architecture being jointly developed by JLR and Chery for future premium electric models.
The company has not disclosed battery specifications yet, but reports indicate that the Avinya could use an 800-volt electrical system along with a battery pack in the 80-90 kWh bracket. If introduced, such a setup would support faster charging speeds and higher efficiency compared to many EVs currently on sale in India. Official figures relating to driving range and performance are still awaited.
Which Features Expected?
The cabin has not been revealed though earlier Avinya concepts pointed towards a minimalist layout with multiple digital screens and fewer physical controls. Expected features include a panoramic sunroof, connected-car technology, wireless charging, multi-zone climate control along with advanced driver assistance systems.
The Tata Avinya electric SUV is expected to reach Indian showrooms in 2027. Industry estimates suggest it could be positioned in the Rs 35 lakh to Rs 45 lakh segment, making it one of the brand’s most expensive passenger vehicles to date.
