If you are planning to buy your first car and want something affordable, easy to drive and fuel-efficient, chances are you are looking at Maruti Suzuki. Two of its most popular entry-level hatchbacks are the
Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. Both are trusted names on Indian roads, but they cater to slightly different types of buyers.
Price
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio starts at Rs 4,69,900 (ex-showroom) which makes it one of the most affordable petrol cars in India. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR starts slightly higher at Rs 4,98,900 (ex-showroom), but offers more variants and engine choices. If your budget is tight and every rupee counts, the Celerio has a small advantage here.

Engine and Performance
The Celerio is powered by a 998cc, 3-cylinder K10C petrol engine, producing around 67 bhp and 89 Nm of torque. It also comes with a CNG option. You can choose between a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic, which is great for city driving.
The WagonR offers more flexibility as it comes with either a 1.0-litre engine which is similar power to Celerio or a stronger 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes up to 88.5 bhp. This makes the WagonR feel more powerful, especially when driving with family or on highways. CNG options are also available.
Mileage
Mileage is a big reason people buy Maruti cars as Celerio petrol offers up to 26 kmpl and Celerio CNG can deliver up to 34.43 km/kg.
On the other hand, the WagonR’s petrol mileage goes up to 24.43 kmpl and CNG versions can reach around 34.73 km/kg.
Size, Space and Comfort
The Celerio is a little longer and wider, giving it a more car-like look and feel. However, the WagonR is much taller, which means better headroom and an airy cabin. Taller passengers often find the WagonR more comfortable. The WagonR also offers a bigger boot at 341 litres, while the Celerio focuses more on compact convenience.
Features and Safety
Both cars come with basic features like power windows, keyless entry, and touchscreen infotainment on higher trims. Safety has improved too, with newer variants offering up to 6 airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors.
Both cars are reliable, easy to maintain and perfect for first-time buyers. The final choice depends on whether you value fuel efficiency and price or space and flexibility more.
