The Tata Sierra EV will have its official debut on June 30, 2026, marking the first time for the OG nameplate to go electric. It will sit between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV in the range and serve as the electric derivative to the Sierra Petrol in India. With its debut just days away, buyers looking at the Sierra are now faced with an important question: should they wait for the EV or opt for the petrol version instead?
Sierra EV vs Sierra Petrol: AWD Goes Electric First
The most recent teaser from Tata Motors has confirmed a 'QWD' badge on the upcoming Sierra EV's rear quarter glass, the same badge used on the Harrier EV. This means that the Tata is offering a dual-motor setup, with one motor on the front axle and another on the rear. The Sierra EV will be the second electric model from the brand
after the Harrier EV to come with this configuration. The current petrol Sierra does not come with all-wheel drive. Tata has confirmed an AWD version of the ICE Sierra is in development, but it isn't expected until early 2027. For now, AWD on a Sierra is only possible by going electric.
Sierra EV vs Sierra Petrol: Looks
Visually, the two are nearly identical, so there's nothing unique in terms of design. That said, Tata has made a few EV-specific changes, and that could be exciting for prospective buyers looking for a sustainable option to the SUV. The petrol model's boxy, upright silhouette, flush door handles, blacked-out A and C-pillars, and the signature wraparound rear-glass remain. However, the EV gets a sealed, body-coloured front, since it doesn't need airflow for engine cooling. In comparison, the petrol Sierra has a black grille. The 'Sierra.EV' badging is on the tailgate and a charging flap. The alloy wheel designs appear identical across both versions, though the EV may get aero-tuned variants.
Sierra EV vs Sierra Petrol: Powertrain
Here, the two Sierras go their separate ways. The petrol Sierra is powered by the homegrown automaker's 1.5-litre engines, a naturally aspirated unit, or a turbo-petrol option, as well as a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. Transmission options are a 6-speed manual, 7-speed DCT, or 6-speed torque-converter automatic, depending on variant, and none of them currently offer all-wheel drive.
The Sierra EV swaps all of this for a fully electric setup. It's expected to use Tata's Acti.ev+ platform, also found in the Harrier EV. Moreover, the upcoming electric SUV is also likely to have the same 65kWh and 75kWh battery pack options. The bigger pack is likely to come with a dual-motor AWD layout, confirmed by the 'QWD' badge spotted in the latest teaser, while the smaller pack may stick to a single front-mounted motor. The claimed range is expected to be in the ballpark of 500 kilometres, though Tata hasn't confirmed exact figures yet.
Sierra EV vs Sierra Petrol: Price
The Sierra EV's price in India is under wraps, and estimates vary depending on the report. The introductory price could be as low as Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it close to the petrol Sierra's entry point, while others expect a higher starting price of Rs 18–20 lakh, climbing to around Rs 25 lakh for the top AWD variant. The Tata Sierra ICE starts in India at Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
