Porsche had always promised that its popular 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars would go fully electric, but in a twist, the German brand has now confirmed that the next generation of these cars will still
offer petrol engines, at least for the top variants.
According to Autocar UK,, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed that high-performance versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman, like the Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster Spyder will continue with petrol power. As these models are known for their thrilling six-cylinder engines, which many fans feared would disappear if developed into electric..
However, not all versions will stay petrol, the entry-level 718s are still expected to go electric, which gives Porsche a mixed line-up of both EVs and ICE (internal combustion engine) models.
Blume stated, “We have seen a clear drop in demand for exclusive battery-electric cars, and we are taking that into account.”
Porsche isn’t stopping with just the 718 updates, but big changes are also coming to its SUV range too:
- New Macan Petrol Successor (M1): While the latest Macan is already all-electric, Porsche will also launch a new petrol-powered SUV called the M1, which will be built on the same platform as the next Audi Q5.
- Panamera & Cayenne Updates: Petrol and hybrid versions will continue well into the 2030s, even as an electric Cayenne is planned for 2026.
- All-New Large SUV (K1): The K, which is positioned above the Cayenne, will debut with combustion and hybrid powertrains, despite earlier EV-only plans.
This shows Porsche is slowing down its EV-only transition, much like its Volkswagen Group siblings Audi and Bentley, who have also delayed going fully electric development.
Why the Change?
The luxury EV market hasn’t grown as fast as expected, so Porsche says rising tariffs in the USA and slowing demand in China are damaging profits. By keeping a mix of petrol, hybrid, and electric cars, the company believes it will stay strong and flexible. For more auto updates, keep reading Times Now Auto.
