Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the all-electric GLB will make its way to India. This means the brand will add another model to the brand's growing EV portfolio. The SUV will be underpinned by the company's new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) and in its highest-spec global form, is expected to offer a claimed WLTP range of up to 631 km. While the India launch timeline is yet to be announced, the confirmation signals that Mercedes-Benz plans to expand its electric SUV range beyond the larger EQ models already on sale. Here's a closer look at what has been confirmed so far and what buyers can expect when the SUV arrives.
Built On Mercedes-Benz's New EV Platform
The upcoming GLB EV will be very different from the current GLB available in international markets. Instead of using combustion
engines, the new model will be based on the brand's MMA platform which has been developed for a new family of compact luxury electric vehicles.
Globally, the SUV is expected to be offered with multiple battery and drivetrain configurations. The headline figure is a claimed WLTP range of up to 631 km although that number will depend on the variant. India-bound specifications could differ and are likely to be announced closer to launch.
The design is also expected to move in a new direction. Spy shots and official teasers suggest a cleaner front-end, redesigned lighting elements and a cabin that follows Mercedes-Benz's latest digital layout.
India Plans Have Been Confirmed
Mercedes-Benz India has now officially confirmed that the GLB EV is part of its future product plan. The company has not disclosed an exact launch date but the announcement removes any uncertainty about the model's arrival in the country.
The electric SUV is expected to follow the upcoming CLA EV which also uses the MMA platform. As with other next-generation Mercedes-Benz EVs, fast charging capability, connected car features and a software-focused user experience are likely to be part of the package. The complete feature list, battery sizes and power outputs however, will only be revealed closer to the market debut.
What Buyers Should Know
For buyers considering a premium electric SUV, the GLB EV will add another option in a segment that continues to grow in India. Its biggest talking point is the claimed 631 km WLTP range though the certified figure for the India-spec model may vary once final specifications are announced.
At this stage, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed only the model's India plans and the platform it will use. Details such as pricing, variant lineup and the launch schedule are still under wraps. Buyers interested in the SUV will have to wait for the official reveal but its arrival marks another step in the brand's expanding electric vehicle strategy for the Indian market.
