If the Mahindra Thar Roxx is on your bucket list but the Rs 22.25 lakh ex-showroom price tag for the top-end AX7L variant seems a bit too pricey, then the carmaker now has an alternative for you. Mahindra recently
launched the Thar Roxx Star Edition (Star EDN) and it offers top-end variant features for the price of a mid-level variant. Here's a quick comparison between the Thar Roxx MX5 and Star EDN variants.
Mahindra has launched the Thar Roxx Star EDN at a starting price of Rs 16.85 lakh ex-showroom for the diesel manual powertrain variant. Similarly, the Thar Roxx diesel manual is priced at Rs 16.49 lakh ex-showroom. This means that the new Star EDN is priced at a premium of Rs 36,000 over the MX5. Let's look at all the extra goodies that you get access to for the additional amount.
The Thar Roxx Star EDN gets a piano black grille and the 19-inch alloy wheels from the top-end variant (including spare wheel), finished in black. It also offers new Alcantara Black leatherette seats with suede inserts and a new Citrine Yellow body colour option. The upgrades are not only aesthetic, because the Star EDN also brings top-end variant features such as 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof and Harmon Kardon 9-speaker premium audio to the sub-Rs 17 lakh bracket. Other feature upgrades in the Star EDN include automatic climate control, front ventilated seats and electrically adjustable/foldable ORVMs.
That's a considerable upgrade over the MX5 for just an additional Rs 36,000. This is because the Thar Roxx MX5 gets smaller 18-inch alloy wheels, a steel rim for the spare wheel and a single-pane electric sunroof. It also does not get the 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, premium audio, or the panoramic sunroof. This clearly makes the base Star EDN diesel manual a better value proposition for new buyers.

On the downside, Mahindra has only launched the Thar Roxx Star EDN for the rear-wheel drive (RWD) version of the SUV. This means that those who are looking to buy the 4x4 version of the Roxx will still need to explore the higher variants. For the RWD, Mahindra has additionally introduced the new variant for the Roxx petrol automatic at Rs 17.85 lakh ex-showroom and the Roxx diesel automatic at Rs 18.35 lakh ex-showroom. This makes the better-endowed Thar Roxx accessible to a wider audience.
