With the action heating up in the electric SUV segment over the past few months, Toyota is all set to enter the mid-sized category with the Urban Cruiser EV soon. The new SUV will be the carmaker's first-ever Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) model for India and will mark Toyota's entry in the growing EV market. Based on the model that has already been launched in the European market, we have a good idea of what to expect from the new offering. Here are the launch date and specification details that you need to know.
The Urban Cruiser EV will launch in India on January 20, 2025. The India-spec version can be expected to offer a front-wheel drive configuration and the all-wheel drive version may follow at a later time. This leads us to believe that
the new EV will feature a battery pack of 49 kWh capacity that would return a claimed range figure of approximately 500 km on a full charge. It will also feature multiple driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport and Pedal. To understand in detail how the driving modes work, read here.
In terms of gadgets and safety, the Urban Cruiser EV will come with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver information display, a wireless mobile charger, a 360-degree parking camera, 6 airbags as standard and Level 2 ADAS safety functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors, ABS, EBD, hill hold control and more.

The arrival of the Urban Cruiser EV will expand Toyota's existing portfolio of fuel-only and alternative drivetrains. The carmaker currently holds top position in the hybrid car segment with several popular models such as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross and the Camry hybrid sedan. These are on offered alongside several petrol and diesel-only models such as the Glanza, Rumion, Innova Crysta and Fortuner. The new Urban Cruiser EV will offer Toyota fans the opportunity to go all-electric at an expected price tag of between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 25 lakh ex-showroom.
