Volvo Cars has just achieved a big milestone, as it has delivered its one-millionth plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This is a huge achievement for the Swedish carmaker, which introduced its very first PHEV in 2012 with the V60 estate.
For those new to the term, a plug-in hybrid is a car that can run on both electricity and petrol. You can charge it like an electric car, and if the battery runs low, the petrol engine takes over, this gives you the best experience of both EV and ICE.

Over the past 13 years, Volvo has steadily grown its hybrid business, as in the first half of 2025, PHEVs made up 23% of Volvo’s total global sales and the sales increased from just
46,000 cars in 2019 to more than 1,77,000 in 2024.
The real stars of this success are the XC60 and XC90 SUVs. The XC60 was not only Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2024 but also the global premium PHEV leader for three years straight. Both SUVs were updated in 2024, keeping them fresh and popular in markets like Sweden, the US and China.

Volvo says its plug-in hybrids are often used almost like fully electric cars. In cities, drivers use battery power for nearly half of their journeys which cut down on fuel use and harmful emissions.
To keep the good game going, Volvo has also introduced the XC70, which is its first long-range plug-in hybrid and is capable of driving over 200 km on pure electric power under the CLTC test cycle.
Today, Volvo offers plug-in hybrid versions of five models alongside six fully electric cars. And with this million-car milestone, the brand has the highest share of PHEVs among legacy luxury carmakers.
