Mahindra & Mahindra has turned the Mahindra Thar into more than just an off-road vehicle. What was once seen as a pure adventure SUV is now a mix of rugged ability and everyday usability. The 2026 Thar is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 17.63 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most accessible lifestyle SUVs in India.
Built
The Thar is known for its strong build. It uses a body-on-frame chassis, which is designed to handle rough roads, mud, and uneven terrain. With a ground clearance of 226 mm, the SUV can easily tackle bad roads, speed breakers, and off-road trails. It also comes with a 4x4 system with low-range gearbox, which is useful for serious off-roading.
Engine Options
Mahindra offers multiple engine options in the Thar, so buyers
can choose based on their needs. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine is more powerful and suitable for those who want better performance. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is focused on efficiency and is available with rear-wheel drive. For proper off-road use, the 2.2-litre diesel engine with 4x4 is the preferred choice. All engines come with manual and automatic gearbox options, making the SUV easier to drive in city conditions.

Interior
Earlier, the Thar was known for being basic inside. That has changed. The new model gets a 26.03 cm touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. It also features a digital instrument cluster and improved cabin layout. Mahindra has added rear AC vents, better seat comfort, and more practical features, making it easier to use daily.
Safety Features
Safety has also seen improvements in the new Thar. It comes with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) along with rollover mitigation, which helps keep the car stable on uneven surfaces. Other features include hill hold and hill descent control, rear-view camera and dual airbags. These additions make driving safer, especially in difficult conditions.
Design
The Thar continues to carry its boxy and rugged design, which is one of its biggest strengths. It gets round headlamps, a bold front grille, and 16 or 18-inch wheels, giving it a strong and recognizable road presence. The Mahindra Thar has evolved into a more complete SUV. It still offers strong off-road capability, but now also adds comfort and features for daily driving.
