After much anticipation, Toyota is expected to enter India's electric vehicle (EV) segment with a mid-sized SUV model expected to launch on January 19. The Urban Cruiser EV has already made landfall in
global markets like Europe and will compete in India against existing rivals such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and the soon-to-arrive Maruti Suzuki eVitara. Here are five things to expect from Toyota's first EV for India.
1. Urban Cruiser EV Battery And Range:
While international markets get the option of all-wheel drive, the India-spec Urban Cruiser EV will most probably be a front-wheel drive version. We can expect the electric SUV to feature a 49 kWh battery pack and a claimed range of up to 500 km or more.
2. Exterior Design Of Urban Cruiser EV:
The electric Toyota SUV will follow the brand's 'Urban Tech' design theme and get the signature 'hammerhead' front look, giving it an upright stance. The 2,700 mm wheelbase and EV architecture would lead to ample space inside the cabin and it would also have a turning radius of 5.2 metres.
3. Urban Cruiser EV Driving Modes:
The Urban Cruiser EV will feature multiple driving modes and brake regeneration as well. We expect the electric SUV to have Eco, Normal, Sport and Pedal driving modes to suit different scenarios. The Pedal driving mode will increase the sensitivity of the brake regen system, making it easier to drive with a single pedal and use minimum brake input.
4. Tech Features Inside Urban Cruiser EV:
Inside the cabin, the Urban Cruiser EV will offer a dual-screen setup. This will include a 10.25-inch driver information display and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and both will be integrated into a floating-style panel in front of the driver and passenger. Other features will include wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera and more.
5. Urban Cruise EV With Level 2 ADAS:
Apart from having standard safety features such as 6 airbags, the new Urban Cruiser EV is likely to be launched with Level 2 ADAS safety functions as well. These would include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors and more.
