With this update, Maruti Suzuki is expanding the Wagon R’s appeal beyond urban family buyers to users who need assisted mobility in everyday driving conditions.

What Is the Swivel Seat Option?

The swivel seat is a front passenger seat modification that rotates outward when the door is opened. Instead of sliding sideways like a conventional seat, it pivots to face the outside, allowing occupants to sit down or get up with reduced physical effort. Once seated, the seat rotates back into its standard forward-facing position and locks securely before the vehicle is driven.

For this, Maruti Suzuki has collaborated with Bengaluru-based startup TRUEAssist Technology Private Limited through its startup incubation initiative supported by NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore.

Who Is the Swivel Seat Designed For?

This feature is primarily meant for elderly passengers, people with physical disabilities, as well as for those who are recovering from injuries. It reduces the need for bending, twisting, or stepping into the cabin at awkward angles. Caregivers and family members may also find it helpful, as it simplifies assisting passengers during entry and exit without requiring additional lifting or support equipment.

How The Swivel Seat Works

The swivel mechanism is electrically operated and activated via a dedicated control switch. When the car is parked and the door is open, the seat rotates outward to a preset angle. Safety interlocks ensure the vehicle cannot be driven unless the seat is fully returned and locked in position. The setup is integrated into the Wagon R’s structure without altering core safety systems.

The swivel seat option is offered as a company-approved accessory on select Maruti Suzuki Wagon R variants, depending on market availability. It is installed through authorised dealerships to ensure compliance with warranty and safety guidelines. Availability may vary by location, and buyers are advised to check compatibility with specific trims before purchase.

Safety, Practicality, And Limitations

The swivel seat retains standard seatbelt functionality and does not interfere with airbags or crash structures. However, it is limited to the front passenger side and is not available for rear seats. Boot space and overall cabin layout remain unchanged.
