When it comes to compact, affordable cars in India, Maruti Suzuki continues to rule the market. In August 2025, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR once again topped the list and proved why it is called the “people’s car” by becoming the best-selling compact hatchback of the month. With 14,552 units sold in August, this car grabbed the number one spot on the sales chart.
Following the path, right behind it was another Maruti ‘Baleno’ with 12,549 units sold. Interestingly, the Baleno’s steady performance pushed the Swift down to third place, where it sold 14,190 units in July, dropped to 12,385 units in August, showing an obvious dip in month-on-month sales.
The fourth spot was taken by yet another Maruti, the Alto, with 5,520 units sold, however, compared
to last year’s 8,546 units in August 2024, the Alto has seen 35% decline. Breaking Maruti’s streak, Tata Motors made its place in the list with the Tiago, which took fifth place by selling 5,250 units, which indicates that Tata is slowly but surely making inroads into the small car market.

The rest of the list was a mixed bag, with the Toyota Glanza stood at sixth with 5,102 units, while the Tata Altroz (3,959 units) and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (3,908 units) followed close behind. The Hyundai i20 also grabbed ninth place with 3,634 units sold, and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis rounded off the top ten with 2,097 units sold.
This sales chart clearly shows that Maruti Suzuki still holds the tag of the king of hatchbacks in India, with four of its models dominating the top positions. However, with Tata and Hyundai steadily climbing up, the competition in this segment is heating up, with buyers having more options than ever.
