After Lamborghini and Ferrari entered the SUV segment, McLaren may be next. Speaking with Car Magazine, McLaren’s new CEO Nick Collins said the company is preparing to move beyond its traditional two-seat
supercars.
Collins confirmed that McLaren’s product roadmap is now locked in through 2030 and includes models already in the early design stage. While he stopped short of explicitly confirming an SUV, he said that the company is working on a model with “more than two seats," a first for the brand. “You’ll definitely see something with more than two seats, but that still leaves us in quite a wide territory,” Collins said.
McLaren’s shift follows its recent acquisition by CYVN Holdings, part of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. With new ownership, the company is looking at “adjacent segments” in the market to diversify its offerings. This marks a major strategic turn for the British manufacturer, which has built its reputation almost entirely on lightweight supercars and hypercars.

Collins also highlighted McLaren’s growing ties with Nio, the Chinese automaker in which CYVN Holdings holds a 20 per cent stake. He told Car Magazine that Nio-sourced components will appear in McLaren vehicles “much sooner than you think — at a component level, even in the current range.” This partnership is expected to improve manufacturing efficiency and open up new technologies to the British brand.
McLaren has not ruled out an electric vehicle either, although Collins suggested it is not the immediate priority. Instead, the company’s near-term focus appears to be on expanding its range and adapting to market trends, particularly the ongoing demand for luxury SUVs.

If McLaren does introduce an SUV, it would follow Lamborghini’s Urus and Ferrari’s Purosangue in reshaping its brand identity to meet customer demand. For now, Collins’s comments indicate only that McLaren is preparing to move beyond its traditional formula.
