Honda Cars India has confirmed that it will re-enter the highly competitive sub-4-meter SUV segment, one of the largest and fastest-growing verticals in the Indian passenger vehicle market. The announcement was made by Honda Cars India President and CEO Takashi Nakajima, who also revealed that the company has lined up an aggressive product plan for India through the end of this decade.
“We are planning to launch ten more models in India by 2030. With SUVs becoming mainstream, seven out of the ten models would be catering to that segment,” Nakajima said. He added that the company is actively considering a range of new products to enhance sales volume while also bringing in premium models to strengthen its brand positioning in the country.

The re-entry into the sub-4-meter SUV category marks an important strategic shift for Honda, which currently has a relatively limited portfolio in India. At present, Honda Cars India sells only three models: the Elevate SUV, along with the Amaze and City sedans. The automaker’s earlier attempt in this category came in the form of the WR-V, which was discontinued when Honda streamlined its model lineup.
The subcompact SUV space is among the most competitive in India, with major players such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Kia dominating the segment. Honda’s re-entry signals a renewed focus on high-volume products that can help the company regain lost market share.
Honda has also indicated its intent to strengthen localisation efforts by collaborating more closely with Indian suppliers and OEMs, similar to its successful two-wheeler operations. This approach, according to Honda Motor Co. Director and President Toshihiro Mibe, could be extended to its car business to maximise cost efficiency and local integration.

With the new sub-4-meter SUV project in the works, Honda aims to establish a stronger foothold in India’s growing SUV market, which continues to account for an increasing share of passenger vehicle sales. While the company has not officially confirmed whether the new model will revive the WR-V nameplate, expect a modern successor to take on established rivals once it launches in the coming years.
