After years of anticipation, American EV maker finally entered India in July 2025, with the Model Y electric SUV. With a single-model lineup of a fully-imported EV, Tesla has begun its India journey by bidding in the luxury segment instead of competing in the mass-market arena. With the Model Y, the EV maker is offering customers the option to go for two different variants that offer different battery and range capacities. Here's a quick explainer of what is being offered in the base Rear Wheel Drive of the Tesla Model Y, which is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh ex-showroom in India.
In terms of design, both the Rear Wheel Drive and Long-Range Rear Wheel Drive variants of the Model Y are identical. It gets the LED light bars on the front and rear, 8
exterior cameras with dashcam and sentry modes and 19-inch alloy wheels. It also comes in 6 different colour options.
Inside the cabin, the 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen takes centre stage as the only point of user interaction alongside the minimalistic dashboard with wraparound ambient lighting and a steering wheel that has some additional physical buttons. It also comes with ventilated front seats and heating for both the first and second rows. The rear passengers get an additional 8-inch screen for entertainment functions and the EV has a 9-speaker audio system.

Safety features include autonomous functions such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning and lane departure avoidance. It also offers connected features that can be used to lock or unlock the EV remotely, along with a pre-heat or cool function.
Most importantly, the Model Y's most affordable Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant offers a 62.5 kWh battery pack that gives it a WLTP-certified range of 500 km on a full charge. The rear-mounted electric motor produces 218 hp and gives the Model Y a 0-100 kmph time of just 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 201 kmph. The Model Y RWD has an ex-showroom price tag of Rs 59.89 lakh and those who want to opt for Tesla's full self-driving system will have to shell out Rs 6 lakh as an add-on cost.
