Ducati has revealed the Desmo450 SM prototype, its first-ever Supermoto motorcycle at World Ducati Week 2026 in Italy. The debut is important because it marks Ducati's entry into a segment it has never explored before. For Indian enthusiasts, it also offers an early look at a new performance motorcycle that could eventually join the brand's global line-up. Although there's no confirmation of an India launch yet, the Desmo450 SM is expected to enter production later this year. The motorcycle was showcased in prototype form and arrives with hardware developed specifically for Supermoto racing including slick tyres built for maximum grip on tarmac.
Built For The Track, Not Converted From A Dirt Bike
At first glance, the Ducati Desmo450 SM may look like a motocross bike with road tyres but that's
not the case. Ducati says it has been developed specifically for Supermoto competition with changes to the chassis, suspension, brakes and engine setup to suit asphalt circuits.
The motorcycle is based on Ducati's 450cc motocross platform but the similarities largely end there. It rides on 17-inch wheels wrapped in slick racing tyres and gets a braking package designed for hard late braking and quick direction changes both of which are key characteristics of Supermoto racing.
The prototype shown at World Ducati Week is still under development, so Ducati has not shared complete technical specifications. Those details are expected when the production version is unveiled later this year.
Race-Tested Before Production
Unlike many concept motorcycles that remain display pieces, the Desmo450 SM has already spent time on the race track. Ducati has been testing it in Supermoto competition with experienced rider Marc Reiner Schmidt to allow engineers to fine-tune the motorcycle in real racing conditions instead of relying only on track simulations.
That approach also explains why Ducati chose to reveal the motorcycle only after months of development. The company says the production-spec model will make its full debut in September, when engine specifications, electronics and performance figures are expected to be announced.
What It Means For Indian Buyers
There's no word yet on whether the Desmo450 SM will come to India but its debut is still worth watching. It shows Ducati is expanding into a completely new category instead of simply updating its existing range.
If the motorcycle enters production as planned and sees demand in international markets, Ducati could evaluate more regions for launch. Until then, the Desmo450 SM remains a global showcase of the brand's first Supermoto project and gives enthusiasts a preview of what's coming next rather than something they'll see in dealerships immediately.
