India’s car market shines in September 2025, with passenger vehicle sales hitting new records as GST 2.0 reforms and festive demand fueled four wheeler purchases. According to Vahan data, Tata Motors emerged as one of the top sellers, registering 40,594 passenger vehicle sales, which is its highest monthly tally yet. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 37,015 units, while Hyundai sold 35,443 vehicles during the month.
Mahindra however wasn’t just busy focusing on passenger vehicles, but it made headlines by selling a total of 1,00,298 vehicles, including exports, in September 2025. That is a 16% growth compared to last year. Also, M&M sold 56,233 SUVs, which marked a 10% year-on-year increase.
Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M
Ltd., said, “Thanks to the impetus from GST 2.0 and the preceding weeks’ pent-up demand, we have seen robust growth in dealer reported customer retails during the first nine days of Navratri*, with over 60% growth in the SUV segment and over 70% growth in the CV segment compared to the first nine days of Navratri last year. The surge in festive demand has placed significant constraints on availability of trailers. We are working to improve dispatches to our dealer network within the constraints.”

Exports added another achievement for Hyundai, with 18,800 units shipped overseas, which is a 44% jump year-on-year and the company’s best export month in nearly three years.
Tarun Garg, Wholetime Director & COO, HMIL, emphasised, “This synchronized growth of SUVs as well as exports underscores HMIL’s strategic importance as Hyundai Motor Company’s global manufacturing hub - a shining example of ‘Make in India, Made for the World.”
With Tata hitting record highs, Mahindra crossing the 1-lakh sales mark, and Hyundai celebrating SUV dominance in the Indian Market, September 2025 has become one of the most exciting months for the auto industry in years till date. After looking at the sales data, it is clear that SUVs are the favorite choice of Indian buyers, and with festive demand just beginning, the coming months could set even bigger records.
