2025 is no ordinary year for Rolls-Royce as it marks 100 years of the Phantom, which is the luxury brand’s most iconic model and to celebrate this major milestone the carmaker is preparing something truly extraordinary, which is an exclusive ‘Private Collection of the Phantom’ and it will soon be revealed, showcasing craftsmanship techniques that have never before appeared in a Rolls-Royce before.
Woodwork Like Never Before
For this centenary edition, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke team of designers, engineers, and craftspeople pushed their skills further than ever, as they introduced three extraordinary techniques:- 3D marquetry which is the wood patterns raised in three dimensions.
- 3D ink layering which is the intricate textures built layer by layer.
- 24-carat gold leafing which is roads and routes depicted with real gold.
Each piece of woodwork is more than just a decoration, but it tells Phantom’s story. From maps and landscapes to floral patterns and historical journeys, every panel depicts the history.
A Year in the Making
The most spectacular part is the interior doors. These are described as the most intricate ever created in Rolls-Royce history. It took an entire year of development to design and assemble them like a mosaic, using Blackwood veneer chosen for its natural grain and to add that extra touch of sheer luxury. As light hits the doors, hidden details come alive, giving passengers a new discovery with every glance and touch.Pushing Craftsmanship to New Limits
The process wasn’t simple and easy, even the speaker grilles were redesigned, replaced with tiny openings cut directly into the wood so that nothing interrupted the masterpiece. From laser etching at multiple depths to gold threadswhich will represent Phantom’s legendary journeys, every detail is deliberate and deeply symbolic, as this luxury brand celebrates a century of ‘Phantom’.Phil Fabre de la Grange, Head of Bespoke at Rolls-Royce, said, “Our Bespoke Collective of designers, craftspeople and engineers are exceptional at what they do. To honour
Phantom in its centenary year, they pioneered groundbreaking techniques in their mastery of wood, combining 3D ink layering, 3D marquetry and gilding within a single surface. These intricate processes push materials to the limits of their natural tolerance, transforming each panel into a stunning, tactile sculpture.”
