Tata Motors is gearing up for the Indian market launch of the all-new Sierra SUV in November 2025, marking the return of one of its most iconic nameplates. This time, the Sierra will be a modern mid-size
SUV built on the company’s flexible platform capable of housing multiple powertrains. It is expected to compete with models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and upcoming new entrants in the segment. Along with its distinctive design and SUV proportions, what will really define its positioning is the variety of powertrain options. Here is a closer look at what is expected under the hood.

Tata Sierra SUV: Likely To Get Tata’s New 1.5-litre Turbo-Petrol Engine
One of the biggest highlights of the upcoming Tata Sierra will be the introduction of the brand’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. This motor has been under development to offer stronger mid-range performance while keeping emissions in check. It is expected to produce around 168 hp of power and is likely to be paired with both manual and automatic transmission options. The engine is being positioned to give Tata a stronger petrol offering in a segment where competitors offer powerful turbo-petrol motors. This will be the first time the new unit features in a mainstream SUV from Tata.
Tata Sierra SUV: To Carry Brand's 1.5-litre Diesel Unit
Alongside the petrol engine, the Sierra is expected to carry the familiar 1.5-litre diesel unit that already powers models like the Curvv diesel. Known for its tractable performance and everyday drivability, this engine will help Tata cover customers who prefer long-distance touring and better fuel efficiency. It is expected to come with manual and possibly automatic gearbox options. This move is important as several buyers in the mid-size SUV segment still opt for diesel, and Tata already has this powertrain well integrated into its portfolio.

Electric Sierra Launch To Follow
After the launch of the internal combustion versions, Tata Motors is also preparing an all-electric Sierra as part of its expanding EV line-up. This model is expected to arrive after the ICE variants are on the road, likely sometime in 2026. The EV will use the brand’s Gen 2 EV architecture, promising longer range and improved performance compared to Tata’s current EV offerings. This strategy allows Tata to target a wider buyer base — from conventional fuel users to early EV adopters — with the same iconic nameplate.
