What actually matters here for Indian riders isn't which name sounds better, it's whether that extra money on the Speed 400 buys you something real, or whether you're just paying for the badge. Once you factor in on-road costs, the two end up close enough in price that the spec sheet is really what should decide it.
Which Bike Actually Costs Less To Own?
On paper, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 wins this one easily. Royal Enfield's entry variant comes in at Rs 1.86 lakh, and even the more dressed-up Classic Chrome trim, the one actually
pitted against the Speed 400, sits around Rs 2.21 lakh, still under the Triumph Speed 400's Rs 2.34 lakh starting price. All mentioned prices are ex-showroom figures.
Royal Enfield has also got one of the biggest dealer and service networks anywhere in the country, so parts and servicing usually cost less and take less time off your hands, which counts for a lot if this is your daily ride rather than a weekend bike.
Which Bike Performs Better On The Road?
This is where that extra Triumph money starts making sense. The Speed 400's liquid-cooled 398 cc single puts out 37 bhp of maximum power and 32 Nm of peak torque, while the Classic 350's air-oil cooled 349cc engine manages 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm, nearly double the power.
Triumph also throws in a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch, alloy wheels wrapped in tubeless tyres as well as a bigger 230 mm rear brake. The Classic 350, meanwhile, keeps things old-school with a 5-speed box, spoke wheels, tubed tyres along with a smaller 152.5 mm rear disc.
