Tata Motors recently launched the petrol versions of its flagship Harrier and Safari SUVs. Both SUVs now get the new Hyperion turbocharged petrol engine and when it comes to petrol-powered large SUVs, mileage is always a point of concern. Addressing the fuel efficiency concerns around the new Hyperion engine, Tata Motors recently did a test run at the NATRAX test track in Indore. During the hypermile tests, the Harrier and Safari SUVs not only showcased the Hyperion engine's efficiency but also set a new record in the India Book Of Records.
During the 12-hour-long hypermiling test run, the Safari Petrol 7-seater was able to achieve a fuel efficiency figure of 25 kmpl according to Tata Motors. In the same test, the Harrier Petrol with the manual
transmission set a new record for the India Book of Records, as the SUV was able to achieve 25.90 kmpl mileage. It is the highest efficiency achieved by a petrol SUV with a manual transmission in the country. Hypermiling is when a vehicle is test-run under a controlled environment to return the maximum fuel efficiency by maintaining favourable speeds and driving conditions.
The 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol represents the latest in engine technology from the Tata Motors stable. The 1,498cc, in-line 4-cylinder motor produces 167 hp and 280 Nm of torque and comes paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic in the Harrier and Safari SUVs. While prices for both SUVs are due to be announced on January 2, pre-bookings are live and being accepted at a token amount of Rs 11,000 by dealers in the Noida, Uttar Pradesh region. This amount may vary between states and dealerships.
While the fuel efficiency results from the NATRAX test are certainly impressive, they do not represent the real-world mileage that both SUVs will be able to deliver in the real-world. This is because every day driving differs a lot when compared to the consistent speeds maintained on a well-paved test track. In the real-world, a vehicle has to perform against heavy traffic, low ventilation, stop-and-go stress and several other factors that can have a big impact on its mileage.
