The Mahindra Bolero has always been known for toughness and over the years, it has earned a loyal fan base in rural areas, small towns and even among city buyers who want a no-nonsense vehicle. The Bolero Neo
continues that legacy even today in a more compact and modern form. The bottom of this lineup is the Bolero Neo N4, which is the base diesel variant and is priced at Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom).
Seating
The Mahindra Bolero Neo N4 is a sub-4-metre SUV, which helps keep costs in check while still offering a tall and upright stance. Despite its compact length, it is a 7-seater, using a practical 5+2 layout with two jump seats at the back.
Engine
Powering the Bolero Neo N4 is a 1.5-litre mHawk100 diesel engine. It is a three-cylinder turbocharged unit that produces around 100 bhp and 260 Nm of torque. For new car buyers, torque is important because it helps the vehicle pull easily, especially on bad roads or when fully loaded. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and sends power to the rear wheels.
Mileage
In terms of fuel efficiency, Mahindra claims an ARAI-rated mileage of around 17.29 kmpl, which is decent for a rugged diesel SUV. The 50-litre fuel tank also means fewer fuel stops on long journeys. With 180 mm of ground clearance (unladen), the Bolero Neo N4 is well prepared for broken roads, village tracks and speed breakers.
Safety
The focus of the N4 variant is clearly on essentials. Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Corner Braking Control, cornering stability control, engine immobiliser and reverse parking sensors.
Interior
Inside, the cabin is simple and functional. You get manual air conditioning with a heater, hydraulic power steering with tilt adjustment, front and rear power windows, and a basic digital instrument cluster. The seats are finished in vinyl upholstery, which is easy to clean and practical for daily use. However, there is no touchscreen infotainment system here.
Exterior
On the outside, the Bolero Neo N4 looks tough rather than stylish. It comes with 15-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps, body-coloured bumpers and side steps for easy entry. Features like alloy wheels, fog lamps, LED DRLs and remote central locking are missing and are offered only on higher variants like the N8 and N11.

Mahindra also offers a 3-year or 1,00,000 km warranty, adding peace of mind for first-time buyers.
The Bolero Neo N4 is not about luxury or technology. It is about durability, seating space and diesel reliability. For buyers who want a tough, affordable 7-seater that can handle poor roads and daily hard use, the Bolero Neo N4 remains one of the most sensible choices in its price range.
The Bolero Neo N4 compares with similarly priced alternatives such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. While the Ertiga focuses more on road comfort, fuel efficiency and family-friendly features with a monocoque chassis and front-wheel drive, the Bolero Neo N4 takes a very different approach by offering a tougher body-on-frame construction, rear-wheel drive and higher suitability for rough roads.
