The BMW M2 has just set a new Nordschleife lap time of 7:25.068 minutes, beating the previous compact class record held by the M2 CS by 0.5 seconds. That's the twist: the car that just broke the record has 50 hp less power and weighs 35 kg more than the car whose record it just shattered. The only difference is a bolt-on accessory package called the M Performance Track Kit. For anyone considering track driving in India, this matters because the kit is road-legal and available to order.
What Is the M Performance Track Kit?
The M Performance Track Kit is an optional accessory package for the BMW M2, and not a new model. It doesn't touch the engine — the S58 3.0-litre straight-six continues producing 460 hp and 550 Nm, unchanged. What changes is everything around it.
The aero package
consists of an adjustable front splitter, aero flicks at the front corners and a manually adjustable swan-neck rear wing with a dedicated Race Mode, all developed using BMW's own wind tunnel. Underneath, the kit adds a motorsport-derived coilover suspension system — the first time such a setup has come with road approval — along with a dedicated chassis tune developed and signed off by test engineer Jörg Weidinger, who was also behind the wheel for the record run.
The lap on May 22 wasn't under ideal conditions either. High ambient and asphalt temperatures plus oil traces in the T13 section cost grip throughout the run. Weidinger pushed through anyway, and TÜV Rheinland officially verified the 7:25.068 result. The previous M2 CS record, set about a year earlier, stood at 7:25.534 — a gap of 0.466 seconds over 20.8km of the most demanding circuit in the world.
What Does This Cost?
BMW hasn't released Indian pricing for the M Performance Track Kit separately. For context, reports from the US put the kit at around USD 27,000 (approximately Rs 25-26 lakh) which stacks on top of the M2's existing price of around Rs 1.12 crore (ex-showroom) in India. That's a significant add-on, though it's worth understanding what you're actually paying for: a road-legal aero and suspension package that has been demonstrated, on one of the world's toughest circuits, to be faster around a lap than a car with 50 more horsepower.
For Indian buyers who track their cars at circuits like the Madras Motor Race Track or Kari Motor Speedway, this kit represents a legitimate performance upgrade without requiring a new engine or losing road registration. Whether BMW India will officially stock and offer this package hasn't been confirmed, so interested owners should contact their dealer directly to check availability and import timelines.
