The latest Toyota Hilux has achieved maximum five-star safety rating from ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) and this result applies to almost all Hilux variants sold in Australia and New Zealand,
except for the Rugged X version. These ratings will remain valid until December 2031.
ANCAP is an independent organisation that crash-tests vehicles and evaluates how well they protect passengers, children, pedestrians and cyclists. A five-star ANCAP rating is the highest possible score and that means the vehicle has performed strongly across multiple safety areas.
The latest five-star ANCAP score adds to the Hilux’s impressive global safety credentials. The pickup has already earned top ratings from Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP, which shows that its safety standards are consistent across different markets. The vehicles tested included single-cab and dual-cab versions powered by the 2.8-litre diesel engine, including newer models with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

In Australia and New Zealand, the Hilux comes with a long list of standard safety equipment and this includes multiple airbags such as front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag and even a centre airbag that helps prevent front passengers from hitting each other during side crashes.
The pickup also gets Toyota Safety Sense, which is a suite of smart driver-assistance features developed by Toyota. These include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) that can detect cars, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and even vehicles crossing or approaching head-on. Systems like lane keep assist, lane departure warning, speed sign recognition and emergency lane steering work together to help prevent accidents before they happen.
In Adult Occupant Protection, the Hilux scored 84 percent, with the cabin staying stable during frontal crash tests. While, protection for the driver and front passenger was rated Good or Adequate in most areas. Side impact tests also delivered full points, which shows excellent protection, while only a small penalty was applied due to how the front structure could affect other vehicles in certain crashes.
For Child Occupant Protection, the Hilux scored an impressive 89 percent. Child dummies representing six- and ten-year-olds were well protected in both frontal and side impacts. Dual-cab versions also offer ISOFIX mounts and top tether points, making child seat installation easier and safer.
