With multiple teasers showing details of the exterior and interior, Toyota had been hinting at the global premiere of an all-new SUV. Up till now, we knew that the new SUV would get a lightbar-style taillamp and a three-row configuration inside. In its latest update, Toyota has now confirmed the name and drivetrain details of the new SUV. Turns out, the mystery SUV is the updated version of Toyota's Highlander SUV, and for 2026, it will arrive in an all-electric avatar with all-wheel drive.
The Toyota Highlander battery-electric vehicle (BEV) with all-wheel drive (AWD) will first arrive in the United States. It will get an updated design that will be significantly different from the outgoing model, which has started to show its age in the current
scenario. The Highlander BEV also marks another major Toyota model name making its transition into an electrified future. Earlier in November 2025, Toyota had unveiled the all-new Hilux BEV electric pickup truck alongside the new-generation of the ICE-powered Hilux. It remains to be seen if Toyota will follow a similar strategy with the 2027 Highlander.
While the Japanese automaker is yet to fully unveil the new SUV, considering that the earlier model had options for both petrol and strong hybrid powertrains, it would be safe to assume that Toyota will offer an alternative to the fully-electric Highlander to maximise its appeal. From what was revealed of the new Highlander's cabin, we can confirm that it will get a digital driver information screen along with a central infotainment touchscreen. The SUV would also get dual-zone climate control and a three-row configuration with captain seats for the second row. The visuals also show a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting on the dashboard and door panels of the electric Highlander.

In terms of the new Highlander coming to India, the chances seem to be slim. That is because historically, Toyota has not brought in the Highlander series of SUVs into the domestic market and the last time rumours floated, we ended up getting the new Made-in-India Innova Hycross. On a larger scale, the Highlander BEV signals Toyota's push towards making an all-electric transition of its existing products in its global portfolio. Meanwhile, Toyota has begun its all-electric journey in India with the unveiling of the new Urban Cruiser Ebella, which means that we could see other all-electric offshoots in the country soon.
