At the 2025 Munich Motor Show, Mercedes-AMG ignited excitement by hinting at the possibility of an all-electric version of its iconic AMG GT two-door sportscar. The idea is still in the evaluation stage, but if it becomes reality, the electric GT would be sold alongside the petrol-powered AMG GT, which can give enthusiasts a choice between classic combustion thrills and futuristic electric performance.
Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, explained the thought process by questioning whether there's a market big enough to justify the necessary investment, however he also stated that at least from a technology point of view, we know how to do that. This means Mercedes already has the strategy and is just waiting to see if enough drivers want
a high-performance electric sportscar. While there’s no fixed timeline, Schiebe emphasised that the company is keeping its options open and could accelerate the launch if demand for electric sportscars rises ahead.
More interestingly, Mercedes-AMG has already given the world a taste of its electric ambitions with the Concept AMG GT XX, a four-door performance EV set to launch in 2026. However, if the two-door GT EV gets the green light, it could serve as a halo car, meaning a model built less for profits and more for shaping the brand’s image and showcasing its engineering power.
Though this wouldn’t be AMG’s first attempt at an electric supercar, as back in 2012, Mercedes introduced the AMG SLS EV, which even set a lap record for EVs at the Nürburgring. However, it sold very less in numbers and was soon discontinued. Now, over a decade later, Mercedes seems ready to give electric performance cars another shot, with more advanced technology and a stronger luxury EV market to capture.
