Volkswagen is preparing to take one of its most successful cars into a bold new era, as the legendary Polo is set to receive a fully electric sibling called the ID. Polo. This all-new electric hatchback marks a major step in Volkswagen’s electric journey and shows how the brand plans to blend its rich heritage with future-ready technology.
The ID. Polo will be the first Volkswagen to be built on the updated MEB+ platform, which is an improved version of the brand’s modular electric drive architecture, which means better efficiency, improved range and faster charging compared to earlier electric models. All versions of the ID. Polo will be front-wheel drive and come with standard DC fast-charging capability.
Volkswagen plans to offer two battery
sizes and three power output options at launch, with a fourth to follow later. Importantly, the entry-level version is expected to start at under €25,000, which will make it one of the more accessible electric cars in Europe.

Although camouflaged, the ID. Polo already reveals a clean and confident shape based on Volkswagen’s new “Pure Positive” design language. This design philosophy aims to keep cars simple, friendly and unmistakably Volkswagen. The ID. Polo will be sold alongside the existing petrol-powered Polo, which will give buyers the freedom to choose between electric and combustion engines in the same familiar size and class.
Despite being a compact hatchback, this car borrows technology from higher segments and optional features include the latest Travel Assist, which supports automatic lane changing and even traffic light detection. Parking will also be easier due to Park Assist Plus with memory function and a 360-degree Area View camera.
Volkswagen has confirmed that an ID. Polo GTI will debut in 2026. This performance-focused version will produce 166 kW (226 PS), becoming the first fully electric GTI and proving that fun and electric driving can go hand in hand.
The Polo is no newcomer and since its debut in 1975, more than 20 million units have been produced worldwide. In 2025, the Polo celebrated its 50th anniversary, underlining its importance to Volkswagen’s history. With the ID. Polo, the brand is not replacing this legacy, but it is reinventing it for an electric future.
