BMW has officially confirmed that its M performance division is stepping into a bold new era, as from 2027, BMW M will begin production of fully electric M models which will be built on the brand’s next-generation
Neue Klasse platform. BMW M cars are known globally for their speed, sharp handling and race-inspired engineering.
BMW M Models - What Is Changing and What Stays the Same?
BMW says that even though these upcoming M cars will be fully electric, they will still feel like true M machines, which means strong acceleration, precise control, adjustable driving modes and a focus on driving enjoyment. Also, BMW has worked to preserve the rear-wheel-drive character that enthusiasts love, while also offering the benefits of all-wheel drive when needed.
BMW M Models - Four Motors, One for Each Wheel
One of the most interesting highlights is the four-motor electric drivetrain as each wheel gets its own electric motor, two at the front and two at the rear, which means the car can control power at each wheel independently, resulting in better grip, sharper cornering and more stability.
BMW has also confirmed that the front motors can be disconnected during relaxed highway driving.

These electric M cars are equipped with a new software and control system which is known internally as “Heart of Joy”, as this system manages how power is delivered, how the car brakes and how energy is recovered when slowing down. BMW calls this setup BMW M Dynamic Performance Control, and it works far faster than traditional mechanical systems, as instead of relying only on brakes, the motors themselves help slow the car down while recovering energy.
BMW M Models - Bigger Battery, Faster Charging
The upcoming electric M models will use a high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable energy. It is built using BMW’s latest Gen6 cylindrical cells and runs on an 800-volt electrical system. The battery has been designed for both road and track use.
BMW M Models - Smart Electronics and Driving Modes
BMW’s Neue Klasse platform uses four powerful onboard computers, which are called “Superbrains.” These control driving dynamics, safety systems, infotainment and comfort features. This setup allows the cars to receive software updates over time. Drivers can expect multiple driving modes, including sport-focused settings with simulated gear shifts and artificial sound profiles.
BMW M Models - Sustainable and Lightweight Materials
BMW M will introduce natural fibre materials in its production performance cars, as these materials offer strength similar to carbon fibre but reduce manufacturing-related CO2 emissions by around 40 percent.
