The next-generation Kia Sonet has started testing in India ahead of its expected 2027 launch, and early spy shots already suggest this won’t be a small update. Camouflaged test vehicles recently spotted on Indian roads hint at noticeable design changes, revised interiors and additional technology features. The Sonet remains one of Kia’s most important products in India because the compact SUV segment continues driving huge sales volumes across the market. And honestly, Kia probably knows this next-generation model cannot afford to feel like just another facelift because rivals in this category have become much more aggressive in terms of features, safety and overall value.
The New Sonet Looks Like It’s Growing Up
The current Sonet still feels modern, especially after its recent facelift.
But the next-generation version being tested appears to be taking a more mature approach visually. Spy shots suggest a flatter front-end design, redesigned LED lighting and a slightly more upright stance overall. The rear also seems different now, with reports pointing toward connected tail lamps and a cleaner tailgate layout similar to Kia’s newer global SUVs. This feels like the direction almost every compact SUV is moving toward now.
Buyers in this segment increasingly want cars that look bigger and more premium, even if the actual dimensions don’t change dramatically. Road presence matters a lot here because many people buying compact SUVs today are upgrading from hatchbacks or smaller cars. The test cars also appear to get new alloy wheel designs and revised proportions. Heavy camouflage still hides most finer details, but it’s already clear Kia is trying to make the next Sonet look noticeably different from the current one.
Inside, the bigger changes will probably come through technology. Reports suggest larger screens, a redesigned dashboard and updated ADAS features could arrive with the new model. And realistically, Kia almost has to do that now because buyers compare feature lists aggressively in this segment.

Petrol And Diesel Engines Are Likely To Continue
Under the hood, Kia is expected to continue with familiar engine options rather than introducing an entirely new lineup immediately. That likely means the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines could carry forward with updates for emissions and efficiency. Manual and automatic gearbox choices are also expected to remain, which honestly makes sense. The current Sonet already offers one of the widest engine-transmission combinations in the compact SUV segment, and many buyers specifically choose it because of that flexibility.
What Kia will need to focus on more carefully is overall packaging and cabin experience. Because the compact SUV market has changed a lot since the Sonet originally launched. Buyers now compare everything: touchscreen size, rear-seat comfort, safety features, ADAS functions, connected tech and even how premium the cabin feels at night.
That’s exactly why the next-generation Sonet matters so much for Kia. It’s entering a segment where staying competitive now requires much more than just sharp styling alone.
