Volvo has just teased its upcoming all-electric SUV, called the EX60, ahead of its world premiere on January 21. The Swedish automaker has claimed that the new EX60 will offer buyers a best-in-class range of 810 km (WLTP) on a full charge, making range anxiety a thing of the past during long travels. Moreover, the new EX60 will offer such long range along with all-wheel-drive capability, making Volvo's proposition an exciting one. Here's what we know so far.
Once launched, the EX60 electric SUV will be Volvo's longest-range EV up till now. It will also be the automaker's fastest charging EV with support of up to 400 kW fast-charging. This capacity of fast-charging would give the EX60 up to 340 km of range in just ten minutes, closing the gap
between the convenience of filling up a tank of fuel vs charging an EV. Moreover, Volvo will also be offering a 10-year warranty on the EX60's battery pack to all customers.
The new EX60 is based on Volvo's SPA3 EV architecture, which allows the automaker to integrate the battery directly into the structure of the car, along with Volvo's in-house electric motors. This makes it more energy efficient and increases overall range. While Volvo has not disclosed any more details on the EX60 drivetrain yet, they have confirmed that the 800 Volt electrical system and the in-house software work together to increase efficiency.
Another highlight of the upcoming EX60 SUV is the smart algorithms co-developed with Breathe Battery Technologies. These algorithms allow the SUV to constantly adjust the battery's energy consumption and power intake, keeping it in an ideal operating temperature across different scenarios and weather conditions. Think of it as Volvo's advanced thermal management system for the battery.

While real-world figures may vary, under WLTP test conditions, the Volvo EX60 has surpassed the range figure of even the BMW iX3, which has a range of 805 km (WLTP). Just like the Volvo, the BMW iX3 also supports fast-charging of up to 400 kW and will compete in the mid-sized SUV segment. With the EX60 quickly following up, it remains to be seen which long-range electric SUV strikes a chord with EV buyers.
