The Honda Civic Type R is one of the most famous performance cars in the world that is still practical enough to use every day, however, it is not available for sale in India, but is now nearly a $50,000 car in the global market.
The 2026 Honda Civic Type R will start at $48,090, and this price already includes Honda’s $1,195 destination charge. Compared to the 2025 model, this is a $1,000 increase, but the bigger story is the long-term jump in price.

When the sixth-generation Civic Type R first went on sale for the 2023 model year, it had a starting price of $44,890 with a slightly cheaper destination fee back then. In just a few
years, the price has gone up by around $4,000, even though the car itself hasn’t changed much.
Despite the higher price, Honda hasn’t made any major mechanical upgrades. Under the hood, the Civic Type R still uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. It makes 315 horsepower and 420 nm of torque.
Power is sent to the front wheels and the six-speed manual gearbox is the only option available in this. There is no automatic transmission here, which shows Honda is still targeting pure driving fans.
Honda hasn’t added new features or performance upgrades to explain the higher cost.
But the price increase isn’t surprising as car prices across the world have been rising since the pandemic and vehicles built outside the United States are now facing new tariffs, which further push prices up. So for buyers hoping prices will drop soon, patience will be required.
At nearly $50,000, the Civic Type R now sits in a tougher space. The 2026 Volkswagen Golf R starts at just over $50,000, but it offers 328 horsepower and all-wheel drive, which gives better grip in bad weather.
On the value side, the Toyota GR Corolla looks tempting. It starts at $41,115, offers 300 horsepower, and also comes with all-wheel drive, making it a strong performance bargain. The VW GTI is cheaper too, but it delivers much less power than both the Civic Type R and Golf R.
