Mercedes-Maybach has pulled the wraps off the updated GLS 680 which replaces the outgoing GLS 600 and introduces a revised V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft. For buyers in India, the update is significant because the GLS sits at the top end of Mercedes-Benz’s SUV range and is among the most expensive models sold by the brand here. Apart from the powertrain changes, the luxury SUV gets subtle styling revisions and additional features inside the cabin. The new engine setup is the headline change, bringing more power to the flagship Maybach SUV.
New Mercedes-Maybach GLS: What Changed?
The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680 continues to use a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine but Mercedes-Maybach has reworked the unit by adopting a flat-plane crankshaft. This layout is more commonly
found in performance cars and replaces the cross-plane setup used in the earlier model.
Output has increased to 603 hp while torque remains unchanged at 850 Nm. The SUV also retains its mild-hybrid system which can provide an additional boost during acceleration. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Mercedes-Maybach says the updated SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. This makes it quicker than the model it replaces.
New Mercedes-Maybach GLS: More Than Power?
The changes are not limited to the engine bay. The exterior receives a refreshed grille design, updated bumpers and new alloy wheel options. Mercedes-Maybach has also added fresh paint choices to the catalogue.
Inside, the cabin largely sticks to the formula buyers already know. Rear passengers continue to get individual seats with functions such as ventilation, massage as well as reclining. The SUV also receives new upholstery combinations and updated trim pieces.
Features such as adaptive air suspension, a premium audio system along with multiple driver-assistance technologies remain part of the package.

Mercedes-Benz has not announced when the GLS 680 will arrive in India but the SUV is expected to join the local lineup after its international rollout begins.
