On November 10, 2025, Toyota globally unveiled the ninth generation of its Hilux pickup truck, marking a new chapter for the iconic product line. The new generation takes the Hilux name a step further than just a design update, as it is also the first-ever battery electric vehicle (BEV) version of the pickup. This is particularly interesting as adding an all-electric pickup truck to its global portfolio is a bold move from the Japanese carmaker, considering the pickup format goes against several fundamentals that a modern and efficient electric vehicle follows. Here are all the details about the new Toyota Hilux BEV.

The Hilux BEV model will roll out from December
2025, with initial launch expected in Japan, Australia, Europe and Thailand. It features an all-new front end with a scooped back design to add a bit of aerodynamic benefits. Other aero elements in BEV include the absence of a traditional grille and specially designed alloy wheels that reduce drag. Even in its BEV version, the new Hilux sticks to its key fundamentals of being a rugged all-wheel-drive (AWD) off-road vehicle. It gets the classic double-cab format and the new Land Cruiser model has inspired the cabin.
Toyota Hilux Electric Cabin And Safety:
The cabin of the Hilux BEV features dual 12.3-inch screens for driver information and infotainment, it gets a centralised command centre for AWD and off-road controls and the electric version also gets a single-action shift-by-wire drive selector. The new Hilux BEV also gets ADAS safety functions such as driving assist, emergency braking and more.
New Hilux BEV Technical Specifications:
Toyota claims that the Hilux electric does not compromise on the model's reputation of being a reliable and durable option for long-term ownership. The Hilux electric retains the body-on-frame construction that gives a rugged nature and added off-road capability. It gets a high water wading capacity identical to the ICE model. The Hilux BEV also features Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system that adapts to different terrains using brake and torque control.
In terms of its electric drivetrain, while Toyota has not confirmed in-depth details, that have revealed that the Hilux BEV will feature a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the AWD system will be based on two eAxles producing 205 Nm of torque at the front and 268.6 Nm of torque at the rear. This gives the electric pickup a WLTP claimed range of 240 km and pre-homologation data shows that the Hilux BEV can accommodate 715 kg of payload in the cargo area, and has a towing capacity of 1,600 kg.

In addition to the Hilux BEV, the Japanese carmaker has also announced that the new generation pickup will soon be available in a hydrogen fuel cell version, which will make a global debut in 2028.
