Tata Motors has recently expanded its petrol car portfolio by launching the Harrier and Safari petrol SUVs. Both flagships now come with Tata's new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol Hyperion engine
and give the brand a fighting chance against other large petrol SUVs in the market. With an attractive starting price tag of Rs 12.89 lakh ex-showroom, the Harrier petrol is also taking the fight against smaller SUVs in the lower segments. Let's find out what the Harrier petrol base variant offers for the entry-level buyers.
The new Harrier petrol Smart variant marks the beginning of the SUV's extensive variant lineup. For Rs 12.89 lakh ex-showroom, customers will have access to a considerable amount of features, such as a 7-inch digital driver information screen, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, Bi-LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, an antiglare mirror, rear parking sensors, second row AC vents, central locking and more.
There is also no compromise in safety in the base variant Harrier petrol Smart, it gets 6 airbags, hill assist, traction control, roll-over mitigation, cornering stability and a 5-star crash test safety rating from Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP.
Coming to the powertrain itself, the new Harrier with the 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine produces 166 hp and 280 Nm of torque output. The base Smart variant is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The SUV recently set a record in the India Book of Records by achieving a 25.90 kmpl mileage during a hypermiling test run at the NATRAX test track near Indore. Tata Motors is also offering four colour options to the base variant customers, these are the Pure Grey, Daytona Grey, Fearless Red and Pristine White.

The one major element the Harrier petrol Smart variant misses out on is in-cabin entertainment, as it does not offer the 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and 4-speaker setup that we get to see in the Pure X variant, which sits one sport above the Smart variant. The Pure X variant also offers the option of an automatic transmission and a host of comfort and tech features. However, it has an ex-showroom price of Rs 16 lakh, which is a considerable premium over the Smart variant's Rs 12.89 lakh price tag.
