BYD made its first appearance at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, unveiling the BYD Racco, a compact all-electric K-EV designed specifically for the Japanese market. The debut marks the brand’s next phase in Japan, alongside the introduction of the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, its first plug-in hybrid model for the country. The two models form the cornerstone of BYD’s new “EV + PHEV” strategy, aimed at expanding its local lineup and reinforcing its long-term commitment to Japan’s shift toward cleaner mobility solutions.

A Compact EV Tailored For Japan
The BYD Racco represents the brand’s entry into Japan’s small EV category, commonly known as the K-car segment. It’s developed exclusively for Japanese roads
and urban conditions, with an emphasis on lightweight construction, compact dimensions, and efficiency. While technical specifications were not fully disclosed, the Racco is positioned as an affordable, city-focused EV designed to meet Japan’s strict size and efficiency regulations. The launch reflects BYD’s plan to adapt its electric technologies to local consumer preferences and regulatory frameworks.
Part of a Dual “EV + PHEV” Strategy
BYD’s display at the event highlighted its broader electrification roadmap. Alongside the Racco, the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i was introduced as the company’s first plug-in hybrid for Japan, expanding its portfolio beyond pure EVs. This move allows BYD to cater to different user profiles — offering hybrids for range flexibility and EVs for urban efficiency. The company confirmed its goal of launching seven to eight electric and hybrid models in Japan by 2027, reinforcing its expanding presence since its passenger vehicle debut in 2022.
Commercial And Passenger Vehicle Expansion
The showcase also included the debut of the BYD T35 all-electric truck and the J6 Living Car Concept, alongside upgraded models like the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal. This unified “ONE BYD” theme — combining passenger and commercial vehicles — underscores the company’s strategy to develop a full ecosystem of new-energy vehicles in Japan. BYD currently operates 66 retail outlets across the country and plans further network expansion before the Racco’s expected launch in summer 2026.

Strengthening BYD’s Footprint In Asia
According to Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales, Japan remains a key market for the company’s regional growth. Beyond passenger cars, BYD has already sold over 500 electric buses in Japan and leads the country’s commercial EV segment. The introduction of the Racco K-EV strengthens this foundation, marking BYD’s continued shift from a commercial EV pioneer to a full-range new-energy automaker.
