The hybrid cars offers a rare and welcome middle path to those still navigating the anxieties of range, infrastructure, and price that come with going for fully electrified model. They do not ask the owner to make sure their building's basement have a charging point, nor they ask you to rethink your relationship with a petrol station. A hybrid option, be it with a mild setup or a strong one, does not require any change in the way you fuel your car. However, what does changes, is how efficiently the car uses that fuel and how much lower its emissions can be. The hybrid cars serve as saviours during the stop-and-go traffic, where conventional petrol engines are usually at their least efficient, they can rely on its electric motor for short distances
in a strong hybrid setup, and draw power from a battery that quietly recharges itself through regenerative braking. While these cars have a very niche market in India, several automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Kia are now planning to add more options in this category. Here's a quick look at some of the upcoming hybrid cars in India.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid
Maruti Suzuki preparing to launch the hybrid version of the Fronx in India, which is expected to take its value-for-money quality further in the segment. The Fronx has always been something of an overachiever, with a coupe-SUV body, a turbo-petrol engine option, and a practical NEXA-branded interior, all in a sub-4-metre footprint that keeps prices within the budget. The new Fronx Hybrid will build on this factor, likely harbouring an entirely new in-house series hybrid system. Compared to the Toyota-procured parallel hybrid, the new system will reportedly work as a range-extender architecture. In this setup, a 1.2-litre petrol engine will acts as a generator to charge the battery. Meanwhile, the electric motor will look after the drive. The model is expected to offer fuel efficiency of 30km/l or more, a sharp leap over the current petrol variants which return around 22km/l. In terms of price, you can expect the entry-level hybrid variants somewhere in the Rs 10–11 lakh (ex-showroom).
Hyundai Creta Hybrid
Needless to say, the Creta is the King of compact SUV segment in India, as evident by its consistent sales performance almost every month. The potential hybrid version is expected to to add its strong presence, giving buyers more options to choose from. The next-gen Creta will likely sit on the automaker's global K3 platform, and have a slightly longer size to approach the 4.5-metre mark. It will pair the familiar 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a compact battery pack. The mileage could be pegged at around 25km/l, which will be a notable improvement over the current petrol automatic's 17.4km/. The hybrid model from Hyundai may carry a starting price of Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom).
Kia Seltos Hybrid
The Seltos Hybrid is also likely to make its debut in India sometime soon. The current-gen Kia Seltos is already a significant upgrade over its predecessor and with a hybrid powertrain, the SUV will expand its reach in the country. The India-spec Seltos Hybrid is expected to have the same 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol mated to a electric motor. For buyers who find the Creta's proportions slightly modest, the Seltos Hybrid will make an attractive alternative, with a bigger, and more premium in feel. The prices are expected to be between Rs 13 to 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Kia Sonet Hybrid
The Sonet has been Kia's one of the best-selling models in the country. The hybrid model is anticipated to enhance the SUV's market-value as a more fuel-efficient and feature rich option in the compact segment. It is likely to use the new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that Hyundai-Kia is developing specifically for hybrid applications in mass-market vehicles. When it comes to fuel efficiency, buyers can expect figures in the middle of 22–25km/. For city dwellers, the upcoming Kia Sonet Hybrid will make an ideal companion with a strong feature list and a good mileage.

Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid
The Mahindra XUV 7XO, launched earlier this year, is also said to get a hybrid variant, which will enhance appeal of the SUV in the mid-size seven-seater segment. The car could be based on a series-parallel hybrid system, wherein the existing 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine will be paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. The system is expected push fuel efficiency to around 25km/l, which will be a staggering improvement for a seven-seater SUV in this weight class. Given the XUV 7XO's already impressive technology suite, the hybrid version will build on strong foundations. It is expected to priced under Rs 30 lakh.
