Musk-owned electric vehicle major Tesla, on Wednesday, announced that it has launched its first charging station in Haryana's Gurugram.
Tesla charging station in Gurgaon: Exact location
Taking a step towards expanding its charging infrastructure in India, US-based automaker Tesla has opened the charging station at DLF Horizon Center on Golf Course Road. The new facility comes up after the opening of the Tesla Center in the city.
In a statement, the company said the significant step reinforces Tesla's commitment to building a robust charging infrastructure in India, empowering customers with seamless and sustainable mobility solutions.
"The company believes in creating the ecosystem. Our mission is to accelerate transition towards the sustainable future and Ev adoption is largely dependent on the ecosystem around the EVs. It's just not the car but also the charging infrastructure which is also important,” Tesla India General Manager Sharad Agarwal stated.
With the commissioning of the latest facility, Tesla currently operates a total of three charging stations across the country, equipped with 12 superchargers and 10 destination Chargers.
The company is looking to create charging infrastructure around the lifestyle of customers, he added.
Located in the Surface Parking Area at Horizon Center, the Supercharging site is equipped with four V4 Superchargers with peak charging speed of 250 kW; and three destination chargers providing charging speed of 11 kW, ensuring flexibility for every Tesla owner and catering to diverse customer needs, it added.
With Tesla Superchargers, a Model Y unit can add up to 275 km of range in just 15 minutes, the company stated.
Tesla sells 157 units so far in India
Tesla’s entry into India’s fast-growing luxury electric vehicle market has begun on a slower note, with the company selling 157 units since it started deliveries in September, according to the government’s Vahan portal.
In November, Tesla delivered just 48 cars, lagging behind established luxury players like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the portal showed. BMW India, in comparision, sold 267 EVs in November alone, highlighting the stiff competition Tesla faces in the premium segment.
The US-based electric vehicle maker launched its Model Y electric SUV as its first offering in India, marking the beginning of its operations in the country.
Despite the initial excitement, the sales figures suggest that Tesla still has some distance to cover before it can challenge the dominance of long-established luxury brands.
Even as sales pick up slowly, Tesla continues to expand its footprint in India. Last month, the company announced the launch of its first all-in-one Tesla Centre in Gurugram. The new facility at Orchid Business Park in Sector 48 is designed to combine retail, after-sales service, deliveries, and charging infrastructure under one roof, offering customers a complete ownership experience.
Sharad Agarwal, General Manager of Tesla India, said the Gurugram centre is a major step in supporting the growing Tesla community in northern India. He added that the company aims to make electric mobility more convenient by building infrastructure around people’s daily lives -- where they work, dine, and travel.
Visitors to the new Gurugram centre can explore the latest Tesla technologies, take test drives of the Model Y, and access the advanced V4 Superchargers installed on-site.
Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus Gen 2, is also on display, showcasing the company’s innovations in AI and robotics.
